With increased screen time and digital media usage, the impact of social platforms on young people’s mental health has been especially acute during the COVID-19 crisis. But the trend is not new: long before the pandemic, several studies highlighted the negative impact of social platforms on kids and teens’ psychological wellbeing. Now that the diagnostic is made, more profound questions arise: what is really happening in our kids’ brains? What are the root causes of the soaring rates of social media addictions? What can we do, as parents, family, and friends to support our kids and teens and which responsibilities do each of us have?
