The Dream Interview Method (DIM) of interpreting the Dreamer’s own or a client’s dreams focuses on assisting oneself or the dreamer in finding the words that Describe, as if to someone from another planet, the emotional and visual dream elements before attempting any interpretation. The “interpreter” plays the role of an Interviewer who has just arrived from another planet and presumes as little as possible about the dreamer’s life experience and does all within his power to minimize his own offerings of projection and interpretation.
The interviewer then recapitulates the dreamer’s unique description. Using only the dreamer’s tone and words once, asking if there is anything to add, correct, or modify in the recapitulation.
Learning how to ask questions that elicit rich descriptions takes humility and it takes practice not to “lead the witness” but to help the dreamer find her own ways of describing the feelings, dream characters and other dream elements that trigger the metaphoric meaning of the dream. No myths or external interpretations needed.
