As a nurse in today's healthcare world I do not think it is enough for healthcare staff to just know how to care for themselves. I agree with the anonymous comment re systems change being necessary. Nurses first need the time and humane working conditions to be able to care for themselves.

Maybe a culture change. We can use marketing like Disney but if we just sugarcoat things and don't change and it comes down to caring for patients

Patients need both the information about the disease and treatment and attention to the emotions set off by the diagnosis—the ‘being heard’ part of the cancer experience.

Yes, agree with Barbara. As a patient/loved one I have not been able to understand medical information when feeling too stressed. (And I'm a medical writer.) Giving patients a handout with clear instructions/info to absorb later is helpful. So is having a point person to call with any questions (which inevitably come up after you leave the office.)
