From Geri Nederhoff's email: "If you do not have Adobe installed on your computer to use InDesign, we recommend that you download a 30-day free trial of Adobe (https://www.adobe.com/sea/creativecloud/start-with-free-creativecloud.html)."
Lorena Polovina
22:31
What are facing pages? Is there a case when you'd use them?

Konstantin Komarov
47:41

Kelly O'Meara
50:58
Is there an ideal file format for placed drawings for keeping total file size down? Like if a linked .ai is smaller than a .png or .pdf…?
NALLELY ALMAGUER-RODRIGUEZ
52:23
Could you do place on center one more time pls?
Hana Kim
53:57
when you place a photoshop file, will it also automatically update the drawing in the InDesign file like it does with the illustrator file?
Laurin Moseley
54:27
yes @Hana
Hana Kim
54:41
thanks Laurin!
Hajar Saksaka
55:05
Are there here any black current GSD students that would be willing to talk to me about it ?
NALLELY ALMAGUER-RODRIGUEZ
55:10
✨✨✨
Tara Oluwafemi
55:46
Hey Hajar! You can message me at taraoluwafemi@gsd.harvard.edu!
Hajar Saksaka
56:12
Thank you so much Tara ! I will reach out soon
Cynthia Deng
57:15
Regarding questions about the portfolio show and tell yesterday, we have a partial recording that admin said they'll review and may make public based on student permissions! And regarding questions about another portfolio sharing session with students who have architecture backgrounds, admissions told us yesterday evening that they will consider expanding to include arch background sessions next cycle but given the timeframe and the sessions for other degrees, they likely will not hold more official arch portfolio sessions for this cycle of applications.
Hajar Saksaka
58:40
will they communicate to the applicants when they share that video ?
Finn Rattana Hok
59:24
sorry this is so random. I couldn’t stay the entire session. Will there be the record of this session? and how can I access it? Thanks
Claire L
01:01:23
Does linking Ai file make the InDesign file larger/heavier than linking png/pdfs?
Kristina Bifani
01:01:54
@Cynthia Thanks you! Were any of the portfolios yesterday from students with an architecture background, or alternatively would there be a student/member of the admissions team that we could get in contact with?
Cynthia Deng
01:02:27
@Hajar, I would hope so! We'll check on that. @Finn, yes this session is being recorded and I'm not sure yet where admissions will put it yet. If I hear back I will write here
Arthur Brown
01:02:39
Is this in regards to the InDesign file or the export when finished? In response to Tara’s explanation
Claire L
01:03:09
Cool. Thanks!
Tara Oluwafemi
01:03:44
Hi Arthur, this was in response to the InDesign file. There are separate options when exporting that will help reduce the file size
Arthur Brown
01:04:03
Thank you!
Tara Oluwafemi
01:05:16
Hi Kristina, there was a mix of students with architecture backgrounds and non architecture backgrounds at the session yesterday
Dave Hardy (he,him)
01:05:43
So any text blocks should be made first in what program? Thanks
fariba alam
01:08:50
Hello. May I know if yesterday"s session was recorded? if yes, where can I find it?
Jie Zheng
01:09:46
Does scale matter in portfolio?
Hana Kim
01:09:46
yes
Cynthia Deng
01:10:48
@Kristina, in the end all of the shared portfolios yesterday were non-architecture background students. I'm guessing Geri Nederhoff (gnederhoff@gsd.harvard.edu) and John Aslanian (jjaslanian@gsd.harvard.edu) would be good admissions ppl to reach out to for connecting to involved students
Cynthia Deng
01:10:50
@Fariba, Regarding questions about the portfolio show and tell yesterday, we have a partial recording that admin said they'll review and may make public based on student permissions.
Jie Zheng
01:11:32
Thank you!

Konstantin Komarov
01:17:19
Do you know of a good source for fonts? Like a website?
Abigael Peckham
01:18:26
@konstantin, 1001 fonts is a good free font site! not sure if anyone else has other recommendations
Konstantin Komarov
01:18:38
Thank you
Kishore S. Shenoy
01:18:41
Google Fonts is good too
Lorena Polovina
01:19:37
Can you show how you center the text without pressing enter again?
Kelly O'Meara
01:19:53
Photoshop is always rasterized right? And Illustrator and InDesign can do vector?
Konstantin Komarov
01:28:15
Can you quickly show step by step text thread option. How to set it up
Konstantin Komarov
01:30:35
Thank you! You just save me so much time )))
NALLELY ALMAGUER-RODRIGUEZ
01:32:46
Thank you Spephanie!! ✨💙✨
Jie Zheng
01:33:44
does this cover page that you are showing okay for application? without specific info about the school and program
Holden Miles
01:34:54
Would this spread be considered 2 pages or 1 based on the GSD application requirements?
Stephanie Lloyd
01:35:41
@holden, not sure, it really depends how you export and set up your PDF. that would be a great question for admissions
Emilie Kern
01:37:25
when admissions officers are looking at your portfolio are they seeing it with facing pages?
Stephanie Lloyd
01:38:26
@emilie, it depends on how you set up your pdf, if we have time at the end we can ask Tara to go over it
Ruowu Wang
01:40:05
will the recording of this info session be shared somewhere? It would be great if we could have a recording so we can review some of the indesign techniques that were mentioned.
NALLELY ALMAGUER-RODRIGUEZ
01:40:20
I found some helpful information here : https://www.gsd.harvard.edu/admissions/apply/
NALLELY ALMAGUER-RODRIGUEZ
01:42:09
Yesterday, the folks at the portfolio show and tell mentioned the count is 15 two-page spreads. I don’t think contents and cover count.
Anna Gabriele
01:46:15
Tara, this is great work! Did you take those art courses specifically to build a portfolio for architecture graduate school?
Konstantin Komarov
01:47:10
Real language
tianyu zhang
01:47:15
AYEEEE
Freeland Livingston
01:47:33
Is it better to have more descriptive/information text? Or shorter the better? Especially for someone who is applying with an Arch background.
Freeland Livingston
01:48:27
Also how many projects is a good volume of work for admissions review?
NALLELY ALMAGUER-RODRIGUEZ
01:51:09
Im interpreting the guidelines as “ each page is 12x18, and each page is a two page spread” does that sound right? Im sorry if it’s confusing.
Konstantin Komarov
01:53:07
I have the same question as Nallely
Sophia Chen
01:53:14
Former math majors🤝
Hajar Saksaka
01:53:35
me too ^^
Anna Gabriele
01:54:35
Thank you for answering, Tara. So you were following your passion, which led to architecture school.
Hajar Saksaka
01:54:43
I do self portraits and I was too scared to include it I am so inspired Thank you :)
Sneha Raji Jacob
01:58:24
Do you guys think that someone with an Architecture background and work experience could create a portfolio that is more diverse with works not limited to simply architecture plans and sections etc.
Dave Hardy (he,him)
01:58:30
and then there can be 30 of those pages?
NALLELY ALMAGUER-RODRIGUEZ
01:58:31
It is helpful to know that the guidelines are a max. Ty.
Anna Gabriele
01:59:17
Is the GSD more of a process school or final product school, if you know what I mean.
Kristina Bifani
01:59:49
^seconded!
Nelson Schildge
01:59:50
It's all right then that my portfolio is 8x10 landscape spreads instead of the recommended 12x18?
Jie Zheng
02:00:21
does March1 prefer non-arch background students?
Hajar Saksaka
02:00:24
I have the same question as Sneha
Grace Margareth
02:00:46
same question with sneha
Kelly O'Meara
02:00:57
They said yesterday both pools are considered separately and it’s about a 50/50 spit
Stephanie Lloyd
02:01:12
^ yes to what Kelly said
Sree Chandana Madabhushi
02:02:31
How do you suggest I include collaborated works?
Claire L
02:02:37
There’s a function called “character styles”. You can save your font, size, alignment, and etc :)
Stephanie Lloyd
02:02:58
@sree, it's always good to credit your collaborators in the project description!
Dave Hardy (he,him)
02:04:13
are panelists looking at portfolios on laptops/projections? so should we just make portfolio match that aspect ratio? thanks!
Stephanie Lloyd
02:04:35
@dave, yes they review portfolios on their screens!
Dave Hardy (he,him)
02:05:02
thanks!
Sree Chandana Madabhushi
02:05:23
Alright, thank you :)
Abigael Peckham
02:06:33
I know Tara had said that she created one portfolio for all the schools she applied to, but can I ask if either of you applied to mostly art focused schools or any more technical schools? I’m not sure how much i should be gearing my portfolio towards different schools (i.e. massart vs wentworth and etc)
Stephanie Lloyd
02:07:41
hi abigael, I really wanted to go to the GSD, so I created my portfolio specifically around the requirements and with the gsd in mind. I also applied to other schools, but used my gsd portfolio as a base and made edits per each school
Stephanie Lloyd
02:07:48
not sure if that's helpful!
Abigael Peckham
02:08:03
Great, that’s super helpful! Thank you
Hassan Haltam
02:09:10
Thanks you Tara and Stephanie! I have to go. Very helpful session.
Hana Kim
02:14:14
can you show us how to export as well?
Roger Jewell
02:17:09
What are everyone’s thoughts on adding professional/firm architecture projects in the portfolio?
Claire L
02:18:48
I’m also a student with background and I was hesitated to include my other works that are not “architectural”. Will try to add some diversity of works now. Thank you for the talks today!
Roger Jewell
02:19:27
Thank you!
Laurin Moseley
02:21:58
Does the GSD offer workshops like these to it's students?
Konstantin Komarov
02:24:02
Will you show us how to export with RGB and 150 dpi formats?
Sree Chandana Madabhushi
02:24:25
Okay, Tara and Stephanie. Thank you!
Daniel Kelly
02:25:59
What's wrong with power point?
Arthur Brown
02:27:47
Do you think the standards are different when people with backgrounds and without are being compared, in regards to the portfolio?
Anna Gabriele
02:28:23
Great question, Arthur!
Stephanie Lloyd
02:28:25
@arthur, they're entirely different committees, so you aren't being compared to background students
Kishore S. Shenoy
02:30:31
Does Non-Architectural Backgrounds include Engineering (Civil and Environmental especially)?
Abigael Peckham
02:30:34
you could also set up your portfolio without using facing pages right? Just to confirm
Abigael Peckham
02:30:45
@Kishore I was wondering the same thing!
Daniel Kelly
02:31:35
Sorry, I'm just software limited
Anna Gabriele
02:31:51
I totally relate to Tara. My first portfolio was done in Microsoft. Very basic. The next portfolio was created in InDesign, and because I also knew that as a creative I needed to eventually learn it.
Kishore S. Shenoy
02:32:54
Thanks. Tara!
Hajar Saksaka
02:33:09
I am graduating with a B.S in architecture not a BA would that be background in Arch right ?
Anna Gabriele
02:33:35
So glad the GSD is offering the software.
Hajar Saksaka
02:33:40
^^^ YES
Grace Margareth
02:33:45

Maya Neal
02:33:53

for those linked illustrator files, during the compression of the indesign file does that mess with the visualization of line weights of the illustrator file.
