Schooling for Critical Consciousness of Racial Injustice
Critical consciousness refer to the ability to understand and analyze oppressive social forces shaping our lives and communities, and to take action against those forces. For youth from marginalized groups, critical consciousness is predictive of a number of a positive outcomes including resilience, self-esteem, academic achievement, and civic engagement. This webinar will offer participating educators 1) an introduction to the concept of critical consciousness; 2) key findings from a five-year research study of the role of secondary schools in fostering youth critical consciousness; and 3) an opportunity to reflect upon the implications for their own work with students. This webinar will focus primarily on programming and practices at the secondary level, but may be of interest to educators in the primary grades as well.
