Intimate Inequalities: Informality and the Afterlives of Slavery in Recife, Brazil

Fischer is a historian of inequality and its persistence who specializes in the study of Brazil and Latin America, focusing particularly on informality, cities, citizenship, law, migration, race, and slavery and its afterlives. At Radcliffe, she will write a book that explores the deep history of Recife, Brazil, arguing that Brazil’s profound inequalities are rooted in the informal, relational dynamics that historically undergird both Brazilian slavery and Brazilian freedom.
