Experiments in the Future of Form

Mwenya B. Kabwe is a Zambian-born maker of theatre and performance, facilitator of creative processes, performer, writer, arts educator, and scholar. She is a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Theatre Dance & Performance Studies (CTDPS) at the University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa. Her creative practice and research is focused on contemporary African theatre and performance, migration, immersive and site-specific performance work, live art, collaborative and interdisciplinary art making and re-imagining African futures. Amongst her recent projects is Priority Mail Process Lab, a virtual process-based arts laboratory which centered on exchange and collaboration, co-curated with a multi-disciplinary artist, Lindiwe Matshikiza; Virtual Blackout: Experiments in the Future of Form, as a project lead on a series of experimental collaborations between scenographers, digital artists and theatre makers. In 2019, she was the local project partner for Babylon Beyond Borders, simultaneous live stream and live broadcast, multi-platform performance event in Johannesburg, London, São Paulo and New York. For Season 3 at the Centre for the Less Good Idea in Johannesburg, she directed Desert, an experimental performance work with film, sound, and installation; For Season 2, she created Jacaranda Time with Tegan Bristow and Cameron Harris, an experimental collaborative work for performance with interactive digital and sound design. Her articles and book chapters have appeared in Acts of Transgression Contemporary Live Art in South Africa (2019), South African Theatre Journal, Art South Africa, Performative Inter-Actions in African Theatre 2: Diaspora Representations & the Interweaving of Cultures, and Performing Migrancy and Mobility in Africa: Cape of Flows.
